Phil Linz "Supersub" New York
Yanks 1962 - 1965 Philadelphia Phillies 1966-67 New York
Mets 1967-68 Phil was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 4, 1939. He led the California League and then the Texas League in hitting in 1960 and 1961, with a .321 and .349 batting averages, respectively, and was named league MVP both years. Phil was a valuable player for the Yankees in the 1960's playing six different positions. Phil hit two homeruns for the Yankees in the 1964 World Series.
Phil is famous for the "Harmonica Incident" in 1964 involving then Yankee manager Yogi Berra. Yogi fined Linz for playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on his harmonica on the team bus, after a doubleheader loss to the White Sox. After the incident the Yanks went on to win 22 of their last 30 games and won the pennant.
Three years later, in 1967, Linz and Berra were reunited, as player and coach, on the New York Mets and they re-enacted the famous Harmonica Incident at the Mayors' Trophy Game at Yankee Stadium - notice the famous facade in the background of the photo. To this day, Phil carries a harmonica with him at all times, and signs his autograph accompanied by a musical note. Phil is a frequent speaker and program presenter for Winning Beyond Winning, and is currently an Account Executive with Fidelity National Title Insurance in New York.
